Fennville's Farm Season Is Winding Down, and Downtown Has Never Been This Ready for Winter

For years, nobody in downtown Fennville was pouring coffee at eight in the morning. Two stylists at Cris' Salon on Main Street kept hearing the same request from their early clients. "We had a lot of clients that asked about coffee and stuff at eight o'clock in the morning, and there wasn't anything," Stacey Hoske told FOX 17. She and salon owner Chrissy Ciokiewicz opened The Brew Sisters downtown in May. Hoske said their first summer was "busier than what I expected by a long shot." That counter belongs to a wider change this fall. As the farm season ends, Fennville no longer depends on its farm gates to carry it through the cold months. More and more, that work happens within a couple of blocks of Main and Maple.

The farm side got smaller this year

The clearest sign is a closure. On April 14, 2026, Virtue Cider founder Gregory Hall announced that Virtue Farm in Fennville had been sold, MyBeerBuzz reported. According to that report, the tasting room, the farm tours, the Cider Society subscription club and on-site events like Apple Fest and the "Farm Sounds" music series are all done. The gates at 2170 62nd St. are closed to visitors. The cider brand itself continues through retail and draft distribution, so the bottles are still on shelves. The 48-acre stop on the way into town is gone.

The rest of the farm calendar is on its usual schedule, and that schedule ends soon. Crane Orchards says its apple picking season "typically" ends close to the end of October. Its late list included Late Fuji, Empire, Jonathan, Golden Delicious, Ida Red, Cameo and Braeburn. The orchard was also running its corn maze and selling pumpkins by the pound, and it asks visitors to call or check the day of a visit. By the last days of October, that season is wrapping up or already over. Fenn Valley Vineyards scheduled "Whiskey & Wine" on October 24 as the last date of its Saturday Music in the Vineyards series.

In other years, this stretch was when Fennville got noticeably quiet. This year, a lot more is going on downtown.

What filled in on Main and Maple

According to Micah Machiela, the city's Downtown Development Authority coordinator, The Brew Sisters was one of four new businesses that came to Fennville within a year, FOX 17 reported in February. Iggy's Pizza moved into the former Pizza Quest space on Main Street, which the Holland Sentinel covered in July 2025. Two offices took space on Maple Street. The city directory now lists an Edward Jones advisor and a D.O. practice in Units 1 and 2 at 200 N Maple St.

Taken together, downtown now covers most of an ordinary day:

Stop Address Posted hours
The Brew Sisters 205 W Main St. Mon 5:30 a.m.–4 p.m.; Tue–Fri 6:30 a.m.–4 p.m.; Sat–Sun 8 a.m.–2 p.m.
Iggy's Pizza 218 E Main St. Wed–Sun 4–9 p.m.; closed Mon–Tue
Edward Jones and D.O. offices 200 N Maple St. Contact each office directly

The Brew Sisters and Iggy's hours above come from the Saugatuck/Douglas visitor listings, and shops often shorten their hours in winter. A Monday opening at 5:30 a.m. is the earliest coffee this downtown has had in recent memory. A pizza place that stays open until 9 p.m. five nights a week means an evening on Main Street no longer has to end at dusk.

The corner the DDA held for a decade

These businesses are clustered near one corner for a reason. "The Downtown Development Authority has owned this parcel right on the corner of Main and Maple for over a decade now, and it's really been a long-term goal of theirs to turn that into the heart of our downtown," Machiela told FOX 17.

That parcel is now City Square Park, at 116 S. Maple St. The money came from three places. Two separate state grants paid for the two halves of the square, one with the band shell and one with the splash pad and an outdoor fireplace. About $65,000 raised from residents and local businesses drew a $50,000 match from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. The Wilcox Newspapers report on the opening says the square opened to the public on Saturday, June 27, 2026, with a covered amphitheater, the splash pad and a new patio at the Fennville District Library. The free City Music Hall Series followed on Thursday evenings from July 2 through August 27.

Only one of the square's two sides is built around water. The other has a band shell and a fireplace, which are built for the months when the splash pad sits empty. The city hasn't posted guidance on when the fireplace will be used this winter. Even so, the square was planned as a place to gather in every season. The Wilcox report also points out that the downtown Social District lets visitors carry a drink from a participating business into the square.

Where the countryside still fits into November

The farms are still part of a Fennville week. In November, they work as places to visit from town instead of the reason to be out at all. Four are worth putting on the calendar:

  1. Fenn Valley Vineyards. The winery's visiting page lists the tasting room as open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week. It closes on Thanksgiving, which falls on November 26 this year, and on Christmas Day and New Year's Day. On Christmas Eve it is open 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  2. Crane's Pie Pantry Restaurant and Winery, 6054 124th Ave. The restaurant and Crane Orchards are separately owned and operated. Crane's lists November 13 as the order deadline for pies shipped for Thanksgiving and December 10 for Christmas. Its own site says it is open daily from 9 to 6, but a May 2026 visitor listing shows Wednesday through Sunday, 9 to 4, so call before driving out.
  3. Fennville Farm Unit at Allegan State Game Area, 6013 118th Ave. The Michigan DNR lists the unit as free and open to the public for wildlife viewing, birding and nature-trail hiking. The same page lists goose-hunting self-registration at the Farm Unit office from October 19 through November 4. Anyone heading out to watch geese in the next week should expect hunters in the area.
  4. Virtue Cider, in the bottle. The farm is closed, but MyBeerBuzz reports that Michigan Brut, The Mitten and the RosƩ cider are still distributed in Michigan through M4 CIC.

All four still take a drive out of town, and most of them run on reduced cold-season schedules. Coffee, dinner and the square are all within walking distance downtown.

December 5, and the building that isn't open yet

Next comes the first Saturday in December. The city's events calendar lists the Fennville Christmas Market for Saturday, December 5, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 515 N Maple St. Fennville's Holiday Celebration is traditionally held on the first Saturday in December as well. It includes reindeer, Santa, activities along Main Street, an electric-light parade and a tree lighting. The page still shows last year's map and schedule, so check it again before December 5 for this year's times.

One building downtown is still waiting. The DePree family of Holland is restoring the former Stevens Hotel as the Wine Trail Inn. Plans call for a boutique hotel with suites, a restaurant and bar, a speakeasy and an event space. The family had hoped to open this summer. In a September 22 update, the newly hired contractor, EV Construction, said hard winter weather, structural problems with the porch and the need to find a new builder had pushed the target to 2027. The contractor also said it planned to work through the winter. The inn's website still says "Coming Soon."

More downtown homes are also planned. On November 12, 2025, the city picked Jubilee Ministries and Allen Edwin Homes for downtown housing projects, and Wilcox Newspapers reported that units could be ready in late 2026 or early 2027. If the inn and those homes open on schedule, the area around City Square gets a hotel and new households in the same year. Both would build on the downtown center the DDA spent more than a decade putting together.

For now, a November weekday in Fennville can look like this: coffee at 205 W Main, an errand on Maple, a stop at the square, and pizza at 218 E Main, all on foot.

If you own a home near Main and Maple, or farther out among the orchards, and want to talk through how a downtown this busy fits your own plans, Tammy L Kerr is glad to sit down with you. Schedule a personalized consultation.
